Sheriff: Inmate who killed 2 at courthouse cuffed in front

Barker spoke at a candlelight vigil in downtown St. Joseph last night to remember the two court bailiffs who were killed on Monday.

"Our hearts are torn apart", Bailey said.

SEATTLE - The FBI said Tuesday it is no longer investigating the mystery of the skyjacker known as D.B. Cooper, almost 45 years after he vanished out of the back of a Boeing 727 into a freezing Northwest rain wearing a business suit, a parachute and a pack filled with $200,000 in cash.

Gary Klugiewicz, an inmate transport expert with security consultant Vistelar in Wisconsin and a retired Milwaukee County sheriff's captain, said the lack of a transport belt could have played a major role in the fatal shootings.

"In that fight the inmate was able to get the deputy's gun away and then shoot the deputy and then move out from that area and kill the two bailiffs", Bailey said.

In 1992, Gordon was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for possessing pipe bombs.

Bailey said none of the bailiffs shirked their duties on Monday.

Larry Darnell Gordon, 44, was accused of holding the teen against her will for two weeks and giving her methamphetamines in exchange for sex, the Berrien County prosecutor's office said Wednesday. Authorities say he tried to take hostages - other bailiffs and officers engaged with the suspect before they shot and killed him.

The sheriff said hes been overwhelmed with supportive calls and texts.

The bailiffs have been identified as Joseph Zangaro, 61, and Ronald Kienzle, 63.

"They were two great individuals that have served law enforcement for many years", Bailey said.

Zangaro was head of court security.

In Cook County, a sheriff's department spokesperson says courthouses are now under enhanced security because of the Berrien County shooting. Kienzle retired as a sergeant of the Benton Township police department after serving in the U.S. Army.

"Sheriff (Paul) Bailey is a friend of mine and I know he lost friends", said Bouchard.

Gordon was being transported from a holding cell in the courthouse when he started scuffling with a sheriff's deputy, James Atterberry Jr.

Gordon had been charged with kidnapping, assault with a unsafe weapon and criminal sexual conduct, police said. He did not identify her.

The incident took place on the third floor of the courthouse.

A probation agent saw the inmate run past her, said The South Bend Tribune.

Jessica Gordon said they divorced earlier this year but he remained close with his 6-year-old daughter.

"We pushed it in front of the door", LaSata said, noting more gunshots followed.

Gov. Rick Snyder cut short a visit to Midland and traveled across the state to St. Joseph to meet with investigators and victims' families.

"I am here to offer my support on a bad day in a wonderful community", Snyder said.

"These are trying times for law enforcement", Barker told the crowd.

A large number of law enforcement officers also participated in the procession, which comes during one of the most historically hard times for those who wear a badge.

"Together we can pull through it and hopefully come out strong".
