Justice Ginsburg regrets comments critical of Trump

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Thursday said she regrets making critical comments about Republican presidential contender Donald Trump.

The leader of the court's liberal wing sought to quiet complaints that she crossed a line in her remarks about Mr Trump, saying in a statement that judges should not comment on candidates for public office.

"On reflection, my recent remarks in response to press inquiries were ill-advised and I regret making them", Justice Ginsburg said in a statement on Thursday.

"Under this test, Justice Ginsburg's remarks would prevent her from sitting in the unlikely event of a "Clinton v. Trump" case that determines the next president", he said.

The left-leaning 83-year-old judge shocked the United States political establishment with her remarks: On Monday, she called Trump "a faker" who "says whatever comes into his head at the moment".

Trump jumped into the fray on Wednesday. Mr. Trump, she said, "says whatever comes into his head at the moment" and has no consistency in his thinking.

In addition to the reaction from Trump, Ginsburg's comments also attracted criticism from others who argued that Supreme Court Justices should stay out of the political arena.

Ms Ginsburg was appointed to the high court in 1993 by Ms Clinton's husband, former president Bill Clinton.

Donald Trump's campaign has signaled strongly to Republicans in Washington that he will pick Mike Pence, the governor of in, as his running mate, though Republicans caution the party's mercurial presidential candidate may still backtrack on his apparent choice.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump and some members of his family have met IN governor Mike Pence as speculation grows that he could be his vice-presidential pick. "The subtext of Ginsburg's comments, of her willingness to comment, is that Trump poses an unparalleled threat to this country - a threat so great that she will abandon judicial propriety in order to warn against looming disaster".

The tut-tutting editorialists for the New York Times and Washington Post, who criticized Ginsburg for mixing in politics, should look back a half-century, a century, and two centuries.

The Supreme Court already had been an issue in the presidential campaign, even before Justice Antonin Scalia died in February. Should we consider amending the Constitution to place a limit on age and serious illnesses, considering the inappropriate remarks of Justice Ginsburg, her age and infirmities? Having made these comments, is she no longer qualified to serve on the panel in the one-in-a-million chance that the November election ends up in the Supreme Court?
