Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson booed at French Embassy

Johnson was appointed foreign secretary as part of Theresa May's new cabinet.

Philip Hammond today became Britain's new finance minister while Boris Johnson, the former London mayor who spearheaded the "Leave" campaign in European Union referendum, was appointed foreign secretary in Prime Minister Theresa May's new government.

Johnson campaigned successfully for Britons to vote to leave the European Union last month.

Four EU and British sources told Reuters on Thursday it was unclear the dinner would go ahead and if so, who among Johnson and the 27 other EU ministers would attend.

The criticism from the usually buttoned-down Ayrault is nearly without precedent in the discreet world of European politics, where top leaders typically attack one another's policies, not characters.

May made fun of Mr. Johnson by contrasting her own experience of negotiating with European counterparts with his.

Mr Johnson is due to come face-to-face with his European colleagues and Mr Kerry, at a summit on Monday.

Of all the European powers, it is Germany that Britain most wants to bring onside in the negotiations over its withdrawal.

It was a point picked up by one reporter after his appointment.

Berlin's Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier described Boris Johnson's recent conduct as outrageous.

Speaking Thursday in London, Johnson also pledged to reshape Britain's global profile. "Got out, refused to take responsibility, and went off to go and play cricket".

After the appointment, Steinmeier tempered his comments somewhat.

He's not the rightwing Polish prime minister, who routinely abuses foreigners.

Johnson said it was inevitable that there would be some criticism coming his way because the referendum result wasn't the one they were expecting. Asked specifically about the French foreign minister's assertion that Johnson had lied during the referendum campaign, he suggested that Ayrault had taken a very different tone in private communications.

The pro-government Daily Sabah newspaper described Johnson as known for "his anti-Turkey and eurosceptic stance as the mayor of London" and said his appointment "raises questions about the future of Britain's worldwide relations".

Johnson's predecessor as foreign secretary was Philip Hammond, who repeatedly called Russia's behavior on the world stage both "a threat and a challenge".

The UK's former ambassador to France, Sir Peter Ricketts - previously the top civil servant at the Foreign Office - said he believed politicians on the other side of the Channel saw Mr Johnson as a "warm, charismatic" person and enjoyed his sense of humour.

Other EU leaders are already pressuring Britain to open formal talks - and warning that the United Kingdom can not have access to the single European market without accepting free movement of EU citizens, a sticking point for many pro-Brexit Britons.

He wrote: "For 10 years we in the Tory Party have become used to Papua New Guinea-style orgies of cannibalism and chief-killing, and so it is with a happy amazement that we watch as the madness engulfs the Labour Party".

"At this incredibly important time that will determine Britain's economic and cultural relations with Europe, it is extraordinary that the new prime minister has chosen someone whose career is built on making jokes", Farron said.

John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, spoke to Mr Johnson by phone today and urged Britain to be "sensible".

He also cited Johnson's remarks that US President Barack Obama held a grudge against Britain because of his "half-Kenyan ancestry".

Turkey is another nation where Johnson will have to lobby for couples counselling.

On a trip to Tokyo in 2015 he wiped out a 10-year-old schoolboy during a game of touch rugby, and in May he won a £1,000 prize for a poem about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan having sex with a goat.
