GfK Poll: Email investigation has hurt Clinton's image

Hillary Clinton is ahead of Donald Trump in several key battleground states, according to this week's polls as reported by a series of NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls of registered voters released on Friday, July 15, 2016.

That survey of Colorado registered voters shows Clinton supported by 43 percent and Trump by 35 percent in a two-way matchup, with 21 percent of those surveyed either supporting neither of the major-party candidates, another candidate, or undecided. For example, Clinton's lead among women is only seven points, according to the poll, while Trump has an 11-point lead among men.

In recent weeks, Clinton has started to acknowledge that many voters simply do not trust her. President Obama won Virginia in 2012.

Two new polls released on Friday show Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump in Florida, just two days after a Quinnipiac University survey showed Trump leading Clinton in the Sunshine State. Whether that translates into support for Trump or a third-party candidate remains to be seen.

The polls came as Trump prepares to accept the GOP nomination during a national convention next week in Cleveland and Clinton readies to accept the Democratic nomination later in the month in Philadelphia.

Even with stronger numbers, Clinton lead has shrunk significantly in a one-on-one matchup with Trump. Gary Johnson, the former New Mexico governor running on the Libertarian line takes 7 percent followed by Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein with 4 percent.

Fifty-six percent of Americans said they would feel afraid and 48 percent say they would feel regret if Trump becomes president - in contrast to just 22 percent saying that a Trump win would make them proud and 26 percent excited.

The AP-GfK Poll of 1,009 adults was conducted online July 7-11, using a sample drawn from GfK's probability-based KnowledgePanel, which is created to be representative of the US population. Overall, the survey found that 78 percent of Hispanic voters have a negative image of Trump. But Colorado and Florida had largely broken Republican in recent presidential elections prior to 2008, and until that year, Virginia hadn't voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964.

The poll, taken between April and early July, surveyed almost 60,000 registered voters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, a large enough sample to make a complete estimate of Electoral College results as the presidential race stands now.

Despite leading, Clinton isn't holding the same advantage she had earlier in the race, which is causing Democrats some worry. Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, with Rubio ahead 47 percent to 44 percent. It has a credibility interval, a measure of accuracy, of 3 percentage points.
