Turkey authorities impose lockdown at Incirlik air base

Commercial power to the base had also been cut off, but the USA was using an internal power source.

And the Pentagon is asking the government to let US warplanes resume suspended operations against ISIS from an airbase in Turkey.

The installation is home to Turkey's 8th Air Wing, and was not planned as a permanent home for USA troops, US military officials have said.

US planes that had already flown out on missions were allowed to land, CNN reported.

While there have been reports that Incirlik had been surrounded by authorities, limiting the movement of U.S. personnel, Hernandez said that was not the case.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said all NATO personnel and units in Turkey "are safe and secure".

Forces loyal to Erdogan largely crushed the last remnants of the coup on Saturday as he launched a purge of the armed forces to tighten his grip on power.

Kerry reiterated US support for Turkey's democratically elected government, according to the State Department readout, and urged authorities to respect the rule of law and safeguard civilian life as they respond to the coup attempt. His statement did not address the current state of operations at Incirlik.

The Pentagon said U.S. Central Command was adjusting flight operations against IS militants to minimize the negative effects of the closure.

The base is used by the USA military to bomb so-called Islamic State fighters in neighbouring Syria. However, Turkey has frustrated the West with its failure to aggressively confront the back and forth flow of extremists across Turkey's southern border.

Turkey has always been the key point of transit for Daesh militants moving in and out of Syria. Turkey is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance.

"In the short term, I think the government will freeze much of the cooperation with the United States against ISIS because Turkey will want to review what's going on with its military", Soner Cagaptay, the director of the Turkish Research Program at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, told Business Insider. Incirlik is also unqiue in that tactical nuclear weapons are housed on base.
