Who to look for on Trump's VP short list: Mike Flynn

Donald Trump is formally vetting a retired general as a potential running mate, but the 33-year Army veteran's views on social issues are sure to draw an outcry from Republicans already wary about Trump's conservative credentials.

"His pro-abortion position is unacceptable and would undermine the pro-life policy commitments that Mr. Trump has made throughout the campaign", Dannenfelser said in a statement.

On Sunday during an interview on ABC's "This Week," Flynn said, "Abortion, I think for women, these are hard issues".

Of course, with speculation reaching a fever pitch - Trump told Cillizza he'll make the decision in the next "three to four" days, and the answer could always swing again - let's hope the most important resume factor for any potential No. 2 on either side of the aisle doesn't get overlooked.

In some ways, tough-talking Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn could make an ideal running mate for Republican Donald Trump.

FLYNN: What people do in their private lives, I'm not - these are not big issues that our country's dealing with that are - that will cause our country to collapse. "I vote for leaders, and, honestly, I didn't vote much in the military because I served whoever is the commander-in-chief", he told ABC News.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn's tenure as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency came to an abrupt end just as the USA was reluctantly pulled back into war in Iraq because of the Islamic State group's brutal blitzkrieg across the country. Flynn going on the Sunday shows and botching the abortion question is stunning because it's such a litmus-test issue for Republican office-seekers.

Flynn is the first non-politician known to be under consideration and would put national security at the forefront of the campaign.

Flynn says he grew up in a family that supported the Democratic Party, but he doesn't recognize that party now.

While Trump's advisors are divided over the merits of putting a military person on the ticket, Trump is reportedly intrigued by the idea.

"This pro-choice issue is a legal issue that should be decided by the courts".

RADDATZ: You've been a registered Democrat, correct?

The Republican National Convention kicks off in Cleveland next Monday.

But even Flynn, in an interview with Al Jazeera's Mehdi Hasan in early May, said that he would not condemn Trump's ban on Muslim immigration.

Women "have to be able to choose" Flynn said.

- Trump also announced that he will go to Indianaon Tuesday night for a rally in Westfield, presumably to give Mike Pence another tryout. Trump didn't name names, but it suggests Flynn might no longer be on that list.
