CDC, Florida probing possible Zika case from Miami mosquito

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Florida had confirmed a Zika infection, and that the CDC is 'closely coordinating with Florida officials, ' according to a statement sent to AFP.

Florida health officials are investigating a Zika infection in Miami-Dade County that may be the first acquired within the state, according to an announcement late Tuesday. But that's the extent of the information they would release.

Miami-Dade County has the most confirmed infections in Florida so far - 88, but all have been found to be travel-related. Health officials have warned that the $589 million the Obama administration redirected from fighting Ebola to combating Zika earlier this year is insufficient and that lawmakers' failure to approve new funding is holding up work on a vaccine, improved diagnostics to test for Zika and research on the long-term consequences of the virus during pregnancy. The department also reiterated guidance to Florida residents on protecting themselves from mosquitoes that may carry the virus. Small outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya virus have been contained in Florida in the past.

CDC officials reported that epidemiologists are interviewing and conducting blood tests of the dead man's family members and healthcare workers who may have had contact with the man, who died in June. "This could be a big deal", said CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook.

"Although the African lineage was first detected in Uganda, the epidemic in South America is attributed to the Asian lineage of the virus", observed the PS. It has struck Brazil especially hard and prompted travel warnings for pregnant women. The mosquitoes that spread Zika bite during the day and prefer to live in and around houses and other structures.

It's a question that has seen some athletes decide not to attend, and it's safe to assume more than a few people considering traveling to Rio to watch the best athletes in the world compete have changed their minds. "Zika kits are intended for pregnant women", it said. It may persist in other bodily fluids for longer, meaning sexual transmission could occur over several more weeks.

Crews in Utah, meanwhile, are trapping and testing mosquitoes and checking hotspots after a man who cared for his dying father was infected with Zika as well. But only about one in five people infected with Zika show any symptoms. So far, the more than 1,300 cases nationwide of the mosquito-borne virus, which can cause fetal abnormalities, resulted from infections obtained when people traveled overseas.

Stay in places with air conditioning and window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside. "Once they become established, it is extremely hard to get rid of those species".

Zika prevention kits and mosquito repellent - strongly recommended for women who are pregnant or planning to be pregnant - are being distributed in the area and can be picked up at the health department as well.
