GOP nominates Trump, heaps criticism on Hillary Clinton

Chris Christie was one of the few people who tried to explain the email scandal, but he didn't really explain why it was jail-worthy; he just assumed it was, knowing that the people in the room all assumed it was.

Trump addressed the convention briefly in videotaped remarks, thanking them for formally nominating him as the party's White House candidate. Dan Sullivan, who said: "We will put coal miners and oil drillers back to work". I saw several convention attendees wearing shirts emblazoned with "Hillary for prison", and similar gear has been hawked at Trump rallies all year.

Donald Trump was a topic Clinton kept going back to, knowing he's opposed the Culinary Union in the past.

The evening's program ended on an unusual note, with an actress-turned-avocado farmer delivering the closing speech - a spot normally reserved for prominent speakers.

Trump's family again took center stage, underscoring the campaign's urgent task to reshape the image of a candidate seen by large swaths of voters as harsh and divisive. Mrs. Trump was the first in a series of family members and friends who were taking the stage to vouch for the man they know. Quoting her explanation of "what difference at this point does it make?" and said anyone who could say that "should not be our commander in chief". Indeed, the idea of sentencing Clinton to prison has been the only thing that's really excited the crowd so far on this listless second day.

With Trump due to make an appearance at the Cleveland convention, the second night of speeches kicked off.

For some Republicans, the night also offered a glimpse of what could have been.

Trump's eldest son said his father will continue to defy the odds and win the presidency just has he has beat expectations his whole life.

"It is our obligation to stop Hillary Clinton now, and never let her get within 10 miles of the White House again", Christie said. The campaign spent much of Tuesday dismissing the plagiarism charges as politically motivated and overblown.

David Axelrod, no fan of Republicans but a guy who knows something about convention stagecraft by doing it for Barack Obama, was befuddled.

West Virginia convention delegates show their support for Trump.

The nation is to get its first good look Wednesday night at Trump's vice presidential pick, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, as he addresses the convention. The latest compilation of polls by The New York Times gives Clinton 43 percent and Trump 40 percent nationally. Four of his children joined the state's delegation on the convention floor for the historic moment and appeared overwhelmed with emotion.

An FBI investigation said she was "extremely careless" but found her actions didn't warrant criminal prosecution. And Flynn soon agreed, saying, "Lock her up, that's right!"

Melania Trump was praised for making progress in highlighting her husband's personal qualities during her Monday night address.

KELLY O'DONNELL, MSNBC: Are you imperfect given the fact of the bridge events were part of why you may not have gotten that position as the running mate?

Clinton said the first day of the Republican gathering had been "surreal", comparing it to the classic fantasy film "Wizard of Oz". "Hillary Clinton is a risk Americans can't afford to take".

GOP divisions erupted on the convention floor Monday afternoon after party officials adopted rules by a shouted voice vote and denied the roll-call vote demanded in lusty shouts by delegates opposing Trump.

"In business, I was trained by my father to make the tough investments decisions today to assure a brighter future tomorrow", he said.

But Colorado's Kendal Unruh, a leader of the anti-Trump forces, called the convention a "sham" and warned party leaders that their efforts to silence opposition would keep some Republicans on the sidelines in the fall campaign against Clinton.
