Giuliani: 'The Vast Majority of Americans Today Do Not Feel Safe'

The networks' own people needed their own airtime and there were other things to talk about: NBC showed tape of Matt Lauer boarding Trump's plane to interview Donald and Melania Trump.

It was a dark and stormy night: The unrelentingly somber and grim tone of the evening was broken only by the 15-minute homage to Trump's purported "kindness, love and compassion" delivered in flawless broken English by his bride, clad in a cotton silk off-white Roksanda dress.

The evening's program ended on an unusual note, with an actress-turned-avocado farmer delivering the closing speech - a spot normally reserved for prominent speakers. Two of Trump's children testified to his character, casting him as a man undeterred by challenges.

The stuff of Donald Trump's 2016 Republican Convention is, in the words of Franklin Roosevelt, "nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance". Questions about plagiarism surfaced for a second day in a row, this time in the eldest son's speech.

"It's time to make America safe again!".

For some Republicans, the night also offered a glimpse of what could have been.

Giuliani further took jabs at expected Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, saying while her experience is the basis for her campaign, it's "exactly the reason she should not be our president".

The much anticipated Republican National Convention got off to a tumultuous start on Monday in a campaign season that has witnessed seemingly infinite controversy and surprises.

Giuliani, a conservative commentator who spoke to the Arkansas delegation to the Republican National Convention, later decried an environment in which "we presume murderers and criminals innocent until proven guilty but we presume police officers guilty the minute the television screen puts on a shooting".

Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa, who was also once a prospective running mate, fared no better as the hall had largely emptied when she came on stage with 10 fellow veterans.

Giuliani said Trump's vice presidential pick, Gov. Mike Pence, shows he will put "highly capable people" back in government.

The Florida leg of her campaign sent out a media release featuring complimentary written statements from her allies to serve as a counterbalance to the hate and accusations lobbed her way Monday night. However, she also sent the internet abuzz for a few passages that too closely mimicked a speech Michelle Obama gave in 2008.

Top Trump adviser Paul Manafort said the matter had been "totally blown out of proportion".

"What happened to, "There's no black America, there's no 'white America, ' there is just America"?" he asked during his speech.

The party spirit of prime time seemed to conquer the rancor from the day's initial afternoon session, when a majority of the delegates from nine states attempted to force a roll-call vote on adoption of the convention rules.

"We can not ask citizens in crime-ravaged neighborhoods to break the code of silence if we continue to allow a code of silence to exist within our own Police Department", he said. Donald Trump is a leader.
