Labour donor to launch legal challenge against Corbyn leadership ballot

A Labour party spokesman said: "The NEC has agreed that, as the incumbent leader, Jeremy Corbyn will go forward on to the ballot without requiring nominations from the parliamentary Labour party and the European parliamentary Labour party".

Mr Smith said he supported the decision to allow Mr Corbyn on to the ballot, before rejecting claims that he would split the anti-Corbyn vote in the contest.

There is, however, a work-around.

"The leadership of the Labour Party simply has ignored this issue and not gone to any length at all to meet with and speak to the Jewish community about its fears", he said in April.

The page owner, Lauren Ashby writes: 'The figure of £25 is a discriminatory price that will clearly exclude a great many from being able to take part in this vote.

If nobody did so in the first round of counting, the last placed candidate would have their votes reallocated and so on until a victor emerges.

Those who belong to affiliated trade unions and socialist societies can also register to vote in the Labour leadership contest. It's a responsibility I'm carrying out.

"But I hope and I expect it will be me". There's been a very long legal discussion this afternoon. I think we now need a real debate about the future direction of our party.

NEC members wrestled with legal advice over whether the leader would need to secure 51 nominations to make it on to the ballot after both sides insisted Labour's rulebook backed their case.

The victor is expected to be announced on the eve of the Labour Party conference on September 24.

Labour MPs have staged a revolt against Mr Corbyn but his allies believe that he will be re-elected by the supporters who swept him to victory a year ago. One of them is expected to give way later today, depending on who can gather the most support from fellow MPs. However, the NEC ruled yesterday that the cut off point for members would be January 12, meaning they would have had to be members for six months to vote in the contest.

His rivals, Owen Smith and Angela Eagle, are under pressure to choose a "unity candidate" to help oust him.

Corbyn called for calm in the wake of the attack on Eagle's office, urging all sides of the bitter dispute in the Labour party to avoid violence and threatening behaviour.
