Washington GOP head slams Cruz, upsetting some in delegation

CLEVELAND (AP) — A day after accepting the Republican presidential nomination, Donald Trump pivoted back to the GOP primaries on Friday, choosing to re-litigate a pair of months-old battles with rival Ted Cruz.

The Texas senator was given a speaking slot, though he had indicated he wasn't going to offer an endorsement.

"It sounded like he was building up to the endorsement" of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, said Wiegert, a Trump delegate from St. Louis.

"That pledge [to endorse the eventual nominee] was not a blanket commitment that if you go and slander and attack Heidi, that I'm going to nonetheless come like a puppy dog and say thank you very much for maligning my wife and maligning my father", he said, according to television station WFAA in Dallas.

But "I think (Cruz) lost all of those people" by failing to endorse Trump, Burlison said. "This convention's been really more of an education for me".

There's certainly overwhelming support for Trump at the convention.

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who followed Cruz on the Cleveland stage Wednesday, recalled being asked by reporters about the possibility of division.

This is obviously speculative, but my suspicion is that Trump was so careful last night, adding very little to his prepared text, that it left him uncomfortable. "I was wishing her well, not endorsing her". Still, a spokesman did call the whole thing a "garbage story in a tabloid full of garbage" when it saw the light of day. Our country has a lot of problems. Once seen as polite and following the rules, the state's Republicans "are now seen as the antithesis of what we pride ourselves on". "But I think it can and I think it should", the governor, one of Utah's 40 delegates to the convention, said. "It got me here", said Trump, who has fired up crowds with promises to create jobs, be tough on national security and ensure that foreign policy keeps American interests firmly at its heart. All of them were, at various times, harshly critical of Trump.

He told them he was not in the habit of supporting people who attack his family. Trump then won the nomination, and most of the Republican establishment proved his contention true by backing a candidate whose worldview directly conflicted with their own stated beliefs. "He has damaged himself and his movement".

Pro-Trump delegates were furious with him.

Steve King said on Thursday that Ted Cruz should have said he was voting for Donald Trump in his speech on Wednesday night. That's what I tell conservatives who may be uncomfortable with Trump.

Following the speech, the chattering classes responded in the most predictable ways, assessing the politics of the moment rather than Cruz's argument itself.
