Froome on a Tour high

Team Sky's leader sealed his third Tour victory on the streets of Paris yesterday and will perform something of a victory lap on home soil at RideLondon on Sunday, effectively a leg loosener before flying to Rio for the Olympics.

Kenyan-born rider Froome, 31, now adds to his Tour victories in 2013 and previous year.

Speaking back at the Sky bus after the final stage on the Champs-Elysees in which Andre Greipel continued his record of winning in every Grand Tour he enters.

Not since 1995 has a rider won successive Tour titles - excluding the expunged wins of Lance Armstrong - when Indurain made it five in a row.

And Merckx, who achieved the last of his victories in 1974, expects the Froome-Sky dominance to continue.

Great riders, including Alberto Condator, Bradley Wiggins, Vincenzo Nibali and Froome himself, had tried and failed to win back-to-back yellow jerseys, but the Kenya-born Briton was not to be denied in 2016 as he unveiled a new string to his bow that caught his rivals off guard. If you look at the guys who are behind him, I don't know who can beat him in the next years.

"He's complete, he's a good time-trial list, he's good at ascents and he's good overall".

Standing tall in the overall standings is Britain's Chris Froome, finishing with an nearly three-minute advantage over Frenchman Romain Bardet, while Colombia's Nairo Quintana came third. He next flies to Rio with a chance to better Wiggins' haul as he competes in the men's road race and time trial.

Froome, who won London 2012 bronze behind Wiggins in the time-trial, said: "It was a huge, huge honour this year to receive my OBE".

"I've been thinking about it for six months". "There's nearly 1,000 metres of climbing, it's 60 kilometres in length and it's extremely tough". I hope I can do that next year.

Froome will headline a Team Sky squad which includes Geraint Thomas, Ian Stannard, Ben Swift, Christian Knees and Dutch sprinter Danny van Poppel in the world's richest one-day race over a 200 km route on the roads of London and Surrey. "The Frenchman took more than the win however, as he moved up the rankings in second place, 4'11" behind Froome.

"It's more of a gamble, being a one-day race and having such small teams, only five per nation".

At the time Froome appeared to be in outright panic as he stood to lose his yellow jersey in the most freaky fashion, but after the race jury intervened he kept the lead, and his sense of humour - later tweeting a video of Brailsford mocking his running style. "We haven't won the team competition but by far we've had the strongest team here - I'm incredibly grateful for that", he added. We love the Tour because it's unpredictable.
