Raigad bridge collapse: 22 bodies recovered, search area to be expanded

Earlier this week, the colonial-era bridge collapsed owing to incessant rains wherein almost a dozen vehicles, including two State Transport buses travelling over the bridge, were have flown away with the water current.

"Till last night we had fished out 14 bodies".

Mahad: Twenty dead bodies have so far been recovered by the search teams along with the locals from Savitri river in the Mumbai-Goa highway Mahad bridge collapse tragedy.

He said apart from 20 boats and almost 160 personnel from Coast Guard, NDRF, Navy roped-in the search operation, the district administration was also taking help of local fishermen who have knowledge about the river's topography. Bodies were flown away with water currant up to 120 kilometres from the spot of bridge collapse.

Search teams, along with locals, have recovered 14 bodies so far.

Constant rain was hampering search operations. He said the government has made a decision to give Rs 5 lakh to kin of the deceased in the tragedy.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said in the Legislative Assembly yesterday that 8 bodies have been recovered so far and 42 people are missing.

The state government on Thursday announced a judicial probe in the collapse of a British-era bridge in which at least 22 people in two buses went missing. He announced ex gratia of Rs five lakh to the kin of the deceased. The local administration used a large crane requisitioned from the National Highways Authority of India and a 300 kg magnet for rescue operations. The British era bridge had been given clearance after a pre-monsoon safety audit.

"The bodies of two women - Shevanti Mirgal and Sneha Baikar - who were travelling in Tavera vehicle were recovered from Harihareshwar in Raigad district and at Rajewadi near Mahad respectively", Bagal said, adding that the body of the third woman, Ranjana Vaje, was recovered from Kemburli.
