Injuries reported in Swiss train incident

The assailant has been identified as a 27-year-old Swiss citizen whose name has not been released as of this writing.

According to early reports, a 27-year-old man started a fire on the train and then began stabbing passengers. The wounded were taken to various hospitals with burn and stab wounds.

Police said two 17-year-olds, a boy and a girl, a 50-year-old man, and two women, 34 and 43 were hurt in the attack. Some of the injuries were said to be serious, but further details were not immediately available. Dozens of people were on the train at the time of the attack, the police statement said.

A massive contingent of rescue workers rushed to the scene, including police, firefighters, ambulances and three rescue helicopters.

It did not spell out whether the man was under arrest or provide any information on a possible motive for the attack, but did say a criminal inquiry was under way.

European states have been on the alert for 'lone wolf' attacks after a series of recent incidents.

The St. Gallen prosecutor is investigating.

A preliminary estimate says damage to the train totaled 100,000 Swiss francs ($103,000).

Last September, a heavily armed gunman opened fire on a high-speed Amsterdam-Paris train, but he was overpowered by two young American soldiers and their companion.
