Liz Cheney One Step Closer to Congress with Primary Win

Liz Cheney, a daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, handily won Wyoming's Republican primary for an open house seat Tuesday night, getting 40 percent of the vote in a crowded field of nine candidates.

Her victory marks a turnaround from what turned out to be a disastrous Senate campaign in 2014, when she launched a primary challenge against popular incumbent Sen.

Christensen released a statement after the race was called for Cheney, congratulating her and thanking his supporters.

In that primary and this one, much of the criticism from her opponents focused on the fact that Cheney had not lived in Wyoming since she was a child.

Rep. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyoming, is not running for re-election.

Cheney raised more than $1.46 million - far more than any other candidate.

She will have a Democratic opponent, Ryan Greene, who won his party's nomination Tuesday, but in overwhelmingly red Wyoming, his path to victory is hard, to say the least.

Cheney released a written statement Tuesday night that said, "I'm honored by the trust Wyoming Republicans have placed in me to serve as our next representative in Congress". Party registration favors the GOP over Democrats better than three-to-one in Wyoming, and no Democrat has held the seat since Dick Cheney's predecessor in the 1970s. She crushed her opponents by assailing President Barack Obama, especially his energy policies, which have helped depress Wyoming's coal industry.

The Democratic Party primary contest sees Charlie Hardy, a retired Roman Catholic priest, facing Ryan Greene, an oilfield services executive from Rock Springs. She quickly dropped out of the race.

Asked if her candidacy serves as a way to try to address criticism of her father's role in the Iraq invasion, Liz Cheney said her campaign has been doing what's necessary to keep the US safe. Many Democrats have decried Cheney's orchestration of the 2003 USA invasion of Iraq, calling it a disastrous foreign policy decision.

Scott Hawkins of Cheyenne also said he voted for Cheney.

Greene said Wyoming's next congressman will need to be realistic and be willing to work with both Democrats and Republicans. "I know her dad slightly, and of course from his record, so that's what I'm going by", he said. As Wyoming continues to bear the brunt of a heavy-handed federal government, it is important we send a Republican to Washington.
