UN Condemns 4 North Korean Ballistic Missile Launches

Touching on the DPRK's test of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) on August 24, Park said the DPRK's nuclear program and missiles is not a simple destabilizing factor but a very serious threat to South Korea's security.

It cited North Korea's ballistic missile tests from April to June as direct snubs of global condemnation and threatened to take stronger measures.

"Now that the USA posed threats to the dignity and the right to existence of the DPRK defying its serious warning, it will continue to take a series of eventful action steps as a full-fledged military power".

An unnamed spokesperson of the North's Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency on Sunday that the US and its allies had "once again carried out a grave hostile act" against the country by objecting to its "self-defense measure".

A nuclear-powered submarine can stay submerged and hidden as long as it has fuel and supplies for the crew, making it harder to track compared to conventional diesel-electric subs that usually have to surface and operate a diesel engine to recharge its batteries. "Deployment of nuclear-powered submarines is needed to counter such provocations".

South Korean military officials and experts have said North Korea has not yet conducted a test of a nuclear warhead, but one military official told Newsis the North is expected to continue tests and launches of ballistic missiles with nuclear capability. "However, this does not mean it will be ready next week, next month, or even next year".

The statement also called on member states to "redouble their efforts" to implement the strongest sanctions ever to be given to North Korea on its fourth underground nuclear test in January and a long-range missile launch in February.

North Korea is seeking to develop nuclear-armed missiles capable of reaching the continental U.S. Outside experts say the country doesn't yet have such weapons.

But Sebastian Maslow, an assistant professor at Tohoku University's graduate school of law in Sendai, said the SLBM threat posed by the North will be limited considering Pyongyang's aging submarine fleet. The UN called the test a "grave violation" of resolutions that ban the Communist country from testing such ballistic missiles.

The North balked at the UN's latest condemning statement on Sunday.

"THAAD is part of the response and so is not undermined by the North Korean SLBM launch, he added".
