UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting on North Korea

North Korea, which had threatened a "physical response" against the Thaad decision, has conducted a series of military technology tests this year, including a fourth nuclear test in January, in defiance of United Nations Security Council sanctions that were tightened in March.

Xi also told Park that Beijing opposed the proposed deployment of a THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea, which Seoul and the United States have said is created to counter an increasing threat from North Korea.

But the president has faced criticism from some national security experts that the sanctions have not succeeded in changing North Korea's behavior.

One analyst said the photos underscored new developments in North Korea's missile hardware.

A senior United States administration official at the G20 in Hangzhou condemned the launches as a threat to its allies and to civilian air travel, and vowed diplomatic action against Pyongyang.

While any missile that passes Seoul's defenses would be potentially devastating for those in its path, the true threat posed by North Korea to its neighbors comes from its purported ability to equip such weapons with nuclear warheads.

"North Korea needs to know that provocations will only invite more pressure and further deepen its isolation", Mr. Obama said after meeting Tuesday with South Korean President Park Geun-hye on the sidelines of an global summit in Laos.

The missiles were fired from areas around Hwangju county, in North Hwanghae province, toward the Sea of Japan, South Korea's military said.

The Shahab-3 is an Iranian medium-range ballistic missile based on the design of North Korea's Rodong-type, which can travel up to just under 2,000km.

Her remarks follow the August 24 launch by the DPRK of a submarine-launched ballistic missile.

The missiles were tracked into the sea of Japan and were perceived by NORAD to be no immediate threat to the North American continent.

Kim described the August test as the "greatest success" and said it put the U.S. mainland within striking range.

Obama signaled the USA would redouble its effort to choke off North Korea's access to global currency and technology by tightening loopholes in the current sanctions regime.

In a joint press statement, the two leaders stressed that the allies would maintain robust countermeasures against the provocative state through Washington's extended deterrence and the strengthening of combined defense capabilities, including the planned deployment of a USA anti-missile system to the peninsula.
