Internet raises $175k for popsicle man, 89

Cervantes posted on the GoFundMe page on September 11 that the account was going to stay open for several more days, before the money is donated to the Sanchez family at the end of the week.

In addition to losing their only daughter, the Sanchezes are now also raising the two children she left behind.

"I saw the picture he took, it was such a great picture, such a powerful picture, and it made me think 'hey this guy needs a day off, '" said Loera.

Macias stopped and bought 20 paletas, or Mexican fruit popsicles, and gave the man $50.

After finding out they could get in contact with Sanchez, Loera and MacĂas chose to start a GoFundMe.

Last week, a man driving through the neighborhood saw Sanchez struggling with the cart.

Joel and his friend Joe Loera set up a Go Fund Me page for the elderly man with a goal of $3,000 to ease his financial struggles - which is why they were shocked when over 7,000 people donated $154,000 in just two days.

"It broke my heart seeing this man that should be enjoying retirement still working at this age", Cervantes wrote on Facebook.

Macias explains that the man, 89-year-old Fedencio Sanchez, and his wife recently lost their only daughter. His wife was selling Popsicles but she got sick, so he went back to pushing the cart to pay their bills. "We wanted to see him, buy from him, ask him questions", said Nallely Renteria, who sought out the street vendor.

His pushcart and paleta supplier Gustavo Gutierrez told United States news site DNA Info that Mr Sanchez retired two months ago, but returned to his trade after the death of his only daughter in July. "We have to pay the bills", the Spanish-speaking vendor told ABC News through a translator.

Sanchez learned of the fundraiser at church on Sunday and was touched by the community's outpouring of love.

Sanchez, although given a life-changing fortune, plans to continue working, according to WLS-TV. Cervantes posted this update: "Just so people know".
