Wawrinka wears down Djokovic, wins Open

"The feeling of: You don't want to lose". "I want to remember what happened 15 years ago". Put the fight on the court and you will have a chance to win.

World No.1 Novak Djokovic was slammed for "complete abuse" of tennis' injury time-out rules during his US Open final defeat against Stan Wawrinka.

"In the decisive moments he was the better player, he was tougher mentally, he knew what to do". "He knew what to do".

Stan Wawrinka revealed he was shaking and in tears over a fear of losing minutes before his US Open final win against Novak Djokovic. Though Nadal's major performance has declined in recent history, the Spaniard entered the match with momentum; he had not lost a set in his three previous matches.

"As I said, I was feeling exhausted already at the beginning of the match".

After two weeks of play, the 2016 US Open concluded Sunday with two champions that few probably saw coming.

This year her quest for a record-breaking seventh US Open title was again undone in the semis, this time by Pliskova, who arrived at Flushing Meadows as a grand slam underachiever who had never been beyond the third round of any major.

When Djokovic was granted a medical timeout ahead of Wawrinka's serve - which is not allowed - Wawrinka only voiced his displeasure briefly. He removed both shoes and socks so a trainer could help with bleeding toes.

Although exchanging breaks in the second set and with the contest apparently set to go into another tiebreaker, Wawrinka finally managed to prevail as Djokovic committed several errors. For another, he owns exactly one Masters 1000 title, well behind the pack: Since 2009, Djokovic has 26, Nadal 16, and Federer and Murray 10 apiece.

"He just steps in - he loves to play the big matches", Djokovic said. Wasn't always, though: Playing in the shadow of his far-more-accomplished Swiss countryman and good pal, Roger Federer, Wawrinka needed until his 35th appearance at a major, at age 28, just to get to the semifinals for the first time. For example, let's look at how Wawrinka measures up against Andy Roddick. In the past 11 finals the Swiss world No 3 has reached, he has won all 11.

Never a Grand Slam finalist before 2016, Kerber beat Williams for the Australian Open title in January, then lost to her in the Wimbledon final in July. Take that trio of highest-stakes matches out of the equation, and Wawrinka is 0-19 in all other matches against the top man. This is Wawrinka's third major title. Kerber defeated Serena Williams in the Australian Open final, and basically defeated her during the U.S. Open.

Back then, the odds were stacked against Wawrinka yet, after dropping the first set, he unleashed his huge backhand and beat Djokovic in four sets.

"He likes to occasionally whack the ball quite hard, and I don't think that Novak likes that", said Wawrinka's coach, Magnus Norman.

Both players have also achieved great things for their countries, but who comes out on top? But the Swiss has proven that when he is on, he is ON, and there is very little - including one of the best defenders of all-time in Djokovic - that could stop him. And after frittering away her first four break points of the match, she converted her fifth with a lob-volley victor that curled over Kerber and alit right by the baseline. He ended up winning in five sets. Did it again after a forehand passing shot drew an errant volley for a break early in the third. Even so, after saving two set points on his serve, Wawrinka abruptly broke back before forcing a first set tie break. Sunday's victory made Wawrinka the first man to win the tournament after saving a match point since - yes, that's right - Djokovic in 2011.

"Winning four Grand Slams in a row for me was an incredible achievement". In a calendar year when the addition of the Olympics made an already crowded summer that much longer and more physically demanding, many players just seemed drained.
