Dominka Cibulkova upsets Angelique Kerber to win WTA Finals title

Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova pulled off a stunning upset to defeat Germany's Angelique Kerber and win the WTA Finals on Sunday, beating the newly crowned World No. 1 6-3, 6-4.

From 4-4, Cibulkova saved two break points on her serve in the ninth game, and then captured the first match point at 30-40 when Kuznetsova's forehand clipped the net and sailed wide.

The Australian Open and US Open champion was the clear favourite but Cibulkova went on the attack from the off and even Kerber's powers of defence were not enough. "You [Angelique] were the inspiration for me to play so well". "I remember the previous year how I was finishing here, so this is big improvement". "Of course, when I'm looking back it's one of my best years". From start to finish, the WTA Finals were filled with exciting, topsy-turvy matches.

This is Kerber's fourth trip to the WTA Finals and the first time she's advanced beyond the round-robin stage of the competition. It's an fantastic honour to be No. 1 for the second year.

From the minute Cibulkova hit the first ball of the match she was on fire, taking Kerber out of her game, belting winners at will, and in complete command of the outing. "I am moving as well a little bit better right now", added the German, issuing her own veiled warning to match Cibulkova's revenge statement. I knew I had to change things because I needed to play my aggressive tennis. I learned to not care, because it will not change. I really wanted to play tennis.

"I saw her on her bench so I went there to shake hands", Cibulkova said. The champion might just feast on a local delicacy as part of her celebrations for a stellar year, having told Yahoo Singapore prior to the tournament that chicken rice was one of the dishes she wanted to try. I'm glad I can be a motivation for people who - you know, people don't see just the big girls winning the big tournaments, but also that somebody like me have a chance to be on the big stage in the world and win a tournament. Kerber, Victoria Azarenka, Sloane Stephens, Simona Halep and Agnieszka Radwanska have each won three singles titles.

Kerber ends the year with the most match wins of the season with a 63-18 record.
