Murray beats Cilic in ATP World Tour Finals opener

It was smooth sailing for Andy Murray as he waltzed his way to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marin Cilic at the ATP World Tour Finals in London on Monday.

Wawrinka will take heart in knowing that he lost his first match past year, too, to Rafael Nadal at the World Tour Finals before making the semifinals.

LONDON (AP) - Taking the court as the No. 1-ranked player for the first time, Andy Murray got the job done.

With the score tied at 2-2, Murray broke Cilic in the fifth game before doing so once again in the seventh game.

He said: "It was a great reception, obviously". "After a long few months, it's nice to know that I'm going to be finishing the year playing in that sort of atmosphere".

Murray's result against Cilic is his 20th consecutive win. The U.S. Open champion, who has reached the semifinals of the season-ending tournament for the last three years, was beaten by Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-3.

A tally of two winners and 14 unforced errors in the opening set was hardly world-leading stuff but it was good enough to beat Cilic, whose garish shorts were more memorable than his shots.

"I played one of my best matches that I've played here and I'll just try to keep it going until the end of the year".

World number seven Marin Cilic put up a good fight and played some eye-catching tennis at a packed O2 Arena but walked off scratching his head at a 6-3 6-2 defeat.

But Murray hardly has time to sit back and enjoy his huge accomplishment, since the Serb is nearly assured of regaining top spot if he wins the tournament - and despite a recent slump, he is the four-time defending champion. I will keep working hard to give moments like this. "It helps you get up for the matches a bit more, as well".

The Olympic champion earned the crucial break in the second set at 2-2 when he took a second break point with a forehand victor and wrapped up the win after 90 minutes when Cilic slapped a forehand into the net.

"He had some chances as well in the first set and at the beginning of the second but when I had my opportunities I took them and that's what winning matches does for you".

Speaking after the match, the Scotsman said: "It's a great atmosphere and I think I played one of my best matches here".

"I was very solid from the first game and very confident. I see the opportunity to go up the rankings".

Wawrinka tried to pump himself up at the start of the second set, delivering a couple of signature backhands, but he looked a shadow of the player who claimed a third grand slam title by beating Djokovic in NY in September.

"I felt very comfortable out there", said Nishikori.
