Blizzard Warning Issued for Thursday

A blizzard warning has been issued for Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in MA, as well as eastern and central Long Island in NY. As many as 14 inches was forecast for NY.

By midmorning, it had largely wound down in the Philadelphia area, leaving roughly 3 inches downtown and as much as 5 inches in some suburbs.

Winds are going to ramp up during Thursday afternoon, gusting to 35-50 miles per hour or higher.

Wind gusts in some New York City areas are expected to be as high as 45 miles per hour, producing possible whiteout conditions. There are Winter Weather Advisories in effect north of the storm and Winter Storm Warnings along with Blizzard warnings in effect close to the center of the action.

Providence will be under a winter storm warning until 8 p.m. and could receive between 12 and 18 inches by tonight. The forecast is still calling for between 6 and 10 inches of snow starting at midnight on Thursday.

The warning remains in effect until 6 p.m.

According to the weather service in Upton, travel will be hazardous with visibilities of a half to a quarter mile at times.

Combine that with steady winds 25-35 miles per hour, gusting to 50 miles per hour and you get near-white out conditions at times.
