Tillerson says Putin meeting 'productive'; Russian Federation warns US against attacking Syria

"The longer-term status of President Assad will be decided by the Syrian people", Tillerson had said, when asked whether the US would get involved in Syria's internal politics on March 30. "I would like to think that they didn't know, but certainly they could have", Trump said. "But it doesn't have to be this way".

"Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said he told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that relations between the two countries are at "a low point" as clear divides remain over Syria, Moscow's alleged meddling in US elections and a host of other major issues".

After the vote at the UN, French President Francois Hollande said Russian Federation "bears a heavy responsibility" for continuing to protect Assad and blocking a united global response.

Syria denied any use of chemical weapons and Moscow said the deaths had been the result of a conventional strike hitting a rebel arms depot containing "toxic substances". Russian Federation says rebels were responsible for whatever chemical agent was used, which the Trump administration calls a disinformation campaign. "Aside from Trump, many in his administration saw it as an opportunity to do what many of them have long supported: Overthrowing the Syrian government", she said in an interview with MEE. The retaliatory strike was praised by many world leaders, while Russian Federation denounced it as an act of "aggression" and accused the US of violating worldwide law.

Tillerson is considering the request, he said, "and we expect that Washington will have a constructive reaction". "The world's two foremost nuclear powers can not can not have this kind of relationship".

Diplomats said that Russian Federation has put forward a rival draft resolution that expresses concern at last week's gas attack and condemns the U.S. strike on Syria.

"We responded, along with friend and allies, in a way that made it clear that Russian Federation was extremely isolated on this issue and on the issue of Syria broadly and the behavior of the Assad regime".

"Russia bears a heavy responsibility through its systematic opposition - in order to protect its ally Assad - to a multilateral response to the issue of Syria", the office of French President Francois Hollande said in a statement yesterday.

Tillerson met with Putin in the Kremlin with the primary aim of persuading Moscow to abandon its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Lavrov seemed to delight in recalling USA attempts to oust dictators in Sudan and Libya. "It's one that we know is serious enough to attract additional sanctions", Tillerson said.

Mr Tillerson also called for Assad to eventually relinquish power.

President Trump said Wednesday that relations with Russian Federation "may be at an all-time low" following Syria's use of chemical weapons last week and the USA airstrike that followed.

"To my colleagues from Russian Federation - you are isolating yourselves from the worldwide community every time one of Assad's planes drop another barrel bomb on civilians and every time Assad tries to starve another community to death", U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley told 15-member Security Council. Any expectations of an easy rapport have crashed into reality amid the nasty back-and-forth over Syria and ongoing US investigations into Russia's activity connected to the USA presidential election.

US President Donald Trump, speaking at an event in the White House, said he was not surprised by China's abstention.
