NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Returning To Greensboro In 2020

Also, the College Cup Division I championship rounds for men's soccer and women's soccer will alternate years in Cary from 2018-21, and the Division I women's field hockey championship will be held in Winston-Salem in 2019. But the NCAA ultimately offered a lukewarm endorsement of the compromise days later, saying the new law met "minimal" requirements to allow North Carolina back into consideration for future events.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference has added a replacement year to contracts for North Carolina venues that lost championships when the league relocated events due to a law limiting protections against LGBT people.

The decision to return to North Carolina comes after Gov. Roy Cooper signed a compromise bill, effectively ending some of the most controversial aspects of HB2.

Men's and women's tennis and women's soccer will return to Cary for tournament play.

Bids had been placed for JDL Fast Track indoor track for 2019, 2020 and 2021 Div. II championships, and Division III championships for 2019 through 2022'. The Coliseum, with assistance from the Tournament Hosts of Greensboro, Greensboro Sports Commission and Convention and Visitors Bureau, is now set to play host to the tournament through 2023.

The deal with Bank of America Stadium, and all other agreements with North Carolina-based venues, were extended by one year to compensate for the loss of a 2016-17 event when applicable. The board, however, directs that any site awarded a championship event in North Carolina or elsewhere be required to submit additional documentation demonstrating how student-athletes and fans will be protected from discrimination. The Dr Pepper ACC Championship Football Game has been a sellout in three of the six years it has been played in Charlotte.

Complete lists for Division I, Division II, Division III and National Championship sites are available on NCAA.com. The city passed the non-discrimination ordinance that prompted state lawmakers to pass HB2 previous year.

Wichita hasn't been a host site for the NCAA men's basketball tournament since 1994.

The changes were enough to convince the NCAA to return to North Carolina, though the organization said that it was "reluctantly" ending its ban. "While the compromise to repeal House Bill 2 was an important first step to fight discrimination and improve our state's reputation and economy, we can not stop until we have statewide LGBT protections".

The NCAA said it selected 613 host sites for preliminary rounds and finals of predetermined championships for the 2017-22 cycle.
