Steve Stephens dead: 'We have closure'

Responding troopers spotted Stephens leaving the restaurant in Erie and went after him, bumping his vehicle to try to get it to stop, authorities said. Stephens led police on a short pursuit before stopping.

Alexis Lee, a childhood friend of Steve Stephens, speaks with a neighbor near Stephens' childhood home in Cleveland, Ohio, Monday, April 17, 2017. "We would prefer that it had not ended this way, because there are a lot of questions" about why Stephens did what he did, according to Williams.

Stephens shot and killed 74-year-old Robert Godwin on Sunday morning.

Brenda Haymon, daughter of Godwin, learned that Stephens had killed himself while planning funeral arrangements for her father.

The Cleveland police thanked officers across the country as well as those behind the almost 400 tips that helped the police locate the shooter.

Henry Sayers, the restaurant's manager, told The New York Times that Stephens bought a 20-piece Chicken McNuggets and large French fries for $5.35, and that employees tried to stall the murderer by purposely delaying his order of fries.

An employee at the restaurant immediately called 911.

Stephens' mother Maggie Greene said that her son had visited her the day before the shooting.

Stephens, AKA Stevie Steve, is then reported to have said that his girlfriend drove him to commit the crime.

Stephens kept posting on Facebook hours before his account was eventually shut down.

Owner Blake Frederick says suspect Steve Stephens visited Sherwin Shooting Sports within the past year.

Tonya R. Godwin-Baines and Debbie D. Godwin said they know Lane did nothing wrong and wanted her to know it. This is a very hard time for me and my family.

The shooting video was visible on Facebook for almost two hours before it was reported, the company said.

At the Tuesday conference in California, Facebook founder and Dobbs Ferry native Mark Zuckerberg expressed his condolences to the family of a Cleveland man whose death was posted on the social media site on Easter. "We're reminded of this this week by the tragedy in Cleveland", Zuckerberg said.
