US President Donald Trump signs order to review H-1B visa programme

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump ordered a review of government procurement rules favoring American companies to see if they are actually benefiting, especially the USA steel industry.

Speaking ahead of signing the order at the Kenosha, Wisconsin headquarters of tool maker Snap-on Inc., Trump claimed that no administration has accomplished more in the first 90 days on military, on the border, on trade, on regulation, on law enforcement and on government reform, than his. However, Turnbull said that more restrictions will be imposed to ensure that workers are brought from outside only to fill the skill gap in order to create more job opportunities for the Australian citizens. "And it directs the federal government to fully enforce federal guidelines prioritizing the use of American firms and goods in federal projects".

American jobs need to be protected and this executive order seems like a good step. The agencies also would propose changes so that the visas are only given to "most-skilled or highest-paid applicants", an administration official told the AP.

A day after Trump's move, Neha said the order will mostly impact students who pass out from poorly ranked engineering colleges.

The Trump administration has so far only called for a review of the H-1B program without proposing any concrete changes.

But it falls way short of Mr Trump's campaign pledge to end the H-1B visa programme.

At the headquarters of hand and power tool manufacturer Snap-on Inc., Trump signed an order that that asks the government to propose new rules and changes that will stop what he called abuses in a visa program used by US technology companies. Sadly, this will come at a great cost to our local economy where foreign-born Tennesseans play a critical role in filling the skilled-employment gap, driving economic growth, and creating jobs for USA born workers.

But the White House said the programme is undercutting American workers by bringing in cheaper labour and that some tech companies are using it to hire large numbers of workers and drive down wages.

According to Loganathan, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh account for 40-45% of the total number of 60,000 H-1B temporary visas from India every year. Also, he has recently reversed several populist promises, including standing up to China, which he contended was manipulating its currency and stealing American jobs, and eliminating the Export-Import Bank, which he billed as wasteful subsidy.

"Any onerous additional restrictions on the H-1B.would hurt thousands of United States businesses and their efforts to be more competitive by hindering access to needed talent", NASSCOM said in a statement.

The order specifically asks the secretary to review waivers of these rules that exist in free-trade agreements.
