Trump tweets don't help: 1st Twitter revenue drop since IPO

That written, the Wall Street analysts who care about little beyond the company's (lack of) revenue growth found little to assuage their fears, as Twitter's $548 million (all figures USD) quarterly revenue represented an eight per cent decline from a year ago, while the company's quarterly net loss was $62 million.

Twitter's user growth has stalled in the past few quarters and the company has been trying to convince advertisers that it will strengthen its user base.

Despite the company's quarterly revenue loss, Twitter saw its shares rise almost 9 percent to $15.94 in early pre-market trading on the New York Stock Exchange on the strength of its earnings beat.

Twitter also highlighted growth in another key metric, monthly active users (MAU), which rose by 9 million from the prior quarter to 328 million. Despite the revenue decline, Twitter's shares shot up more than 11 percent in pre-market trading.

On a quarterly basis, Twitter added 9 million monthly users.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said that while the company expects to "continue to face revenue headwinds", it believes that in executing on its plan in the long term "should result in positive revenue growth over the long term".

Twitter said the content reached 45 million unique users, up 31 per cent from the fourth quarter which was the first full quarter of live content to be streamed on the social media platform.

So it was surprising that despite Trump's incessant tweeting during the US election last fall, Twitter added just two million new users in the last three months of the year.

Revenue at Twitter has slipped into decline, falling for the first time ever.

Slow rise in the number of users and an inevitably slow business from ad inventory due to the sluggishly rising user count are expected to bring trouble to Twitter's revenues.

Analysts on average had expected 321.3m monthly active users, according to market research firm FactSet StreetAccount.

Twitter Chief operating officer, Anthony Noto, said that there is a remarkable growth due to the Trump phenomenon in Twitter.

JPMorgan Chase says it earned $2.4 billion, or 40 cents a share beating the analysts estimates of 30 cents a share for its first quarter.
