Israel intercepts 'projectile' from Syria hours after Damascus missile attack

Israel's attacks tend to center around Syrian military weaponry which they think might be transferred to Hezbollah, with the official narrative being that the arms would be used against Israel the next time they decide to invade Lebanon.

Syria's state-run Sana news agency said Israel had fired several missiles from inside the Occupied Golan Heights, 37 miles south of Damascus, striking a military installation south-west of the airport that serves both military and civilian flights.

Syria's regime is allies with both Hezbollah and Iran, and Israel says Iran is using that connection to funnel weapons and resources to Hezbollah.

Israel's intelligence minister hinted that Israeli warplanes struck a suspected Hizbullah weapons depot near Damascus International Airport on April 27.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, reported that the powerful blast believed to be located near the main road leading to Damascus International Airport, was heard across the capital at dawn on Thursday.

Photos of a major blaze posted to social media sites appear to confirm the suspicion that either a fuel storage unit or explosive weapons dump were hit.

"It's natural that we should have such systems", he said, quoted by Syria's official SANA agency on Thursday, the same day as Damascus accused Israel of firing several missiles at a military position near its global airport.

Four cargo planes originating from Tehran landed in Damascus hours before the strike, according to The report blamed Israel for the missile strike. The Shiite group is aligned with Iran and is fighting in Syria alongside forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Syrian state media has attributed the missile strikes to Israel, the BBC reported.

Intelligence Affairs Minister Yisrael Katz told Army Radio on Thursday morning that the attack in Syria was "entirely consistent with our policy to prevent the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah".
