Trump makes puzzling claim about Andrew Jackson, Civil War

TRUMP: His wife died.

ZITO: That's right. You were in Tennessee. The people of Tennessee are fantastic people.

According to Abraham Lincoln Online, a quote from Abraham Lincoln reads, "Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in".

"He had a very, very mean and nasty campaign", Trump noted.

Zito replied: "Yeah, he's a fascinating".

Trump says former USA president Andrew Jackson was "really angry" about the war which took place 16 years after his death.

Not only that, Trump also went on to say Jackson, who had owned slaves and launched a campaign against Native Americans, had a "big heart".

Trump said of Jackson: "He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart". The Civil War, if you think about it, why?

While it's hard to deal in hypotheticals, The New York Times attempted to fact-check Trump's take on the Civil War with Jon Meacham, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his biography of Jackson. "Why could that one not be worked out?" the president rambled during an interview on Sirius XM Radio with Salena Zito from The Washington Examiner.

He has claimed that no president has accomplished more than he has in the first months in office, although Congress has yet to approve his bid to repeal the national health care reforms that were the signature legislative achievement of his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, and US courts have blocked his efforts to curb immigration from majority-Muslim countries. When Trump talks about Jackson or he himself being able to have "done a deal" to avoid the Civil War, what that means is having allowed slavery to continue. On March 15, Trump also visited Jackson's 1,000 acre estate in Nashville, Tennessee, to mark Jackson's 250th birth anniversary. And why wouldn't he, when he considers Jackson not so much a genocidal chief executive as a "swashbuckler"?

Trump praised "the very great" Jackson's willingness to take on "an arrogant elite".

But that small matter aside, this actually sounds pretty familiar for Trump. Captured by the [British] redcoats and ordered to shine the shoes of a British officer, Jackson simply refused.

Right. But there was no irreconcilable difference about slavery between the South and Andrew Jackson, as Inskeep acknowledges.

In March, Trump tweeted claims that Obama had wiretapped the phones at Trump Tower in NY.

And, as it turns out, Jackson was president during a precursor incident, the Nullification Crisis (see wikipedia as well as a PJ Media article by Tyler O'Neil), in which SC asserted that it nullified federal tariffs that it opposed. "There is no reason there's not peace between Israel and the Palestinians - none whatsoever".
