Pastor Jeffress: Trump Is Ending Gov't 'Assault' on Religious Liberty

The Johnson Amendment was made law in 1954, and it essentially prevents churches and other tax-exempt religious organizations from being too politically involved.

But pastors are already free to deliver political speeches, and regularly do.

"President Trump's executive order today seeks to allow even more employers to deny their employees this necessary health care service under the guise of their personal religious views", Adrienne Mansanares, Chief Experience Officer of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains said.

A spokesperson for the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa told KCCI, "President Trump's executive order is unsafe and ill-advised for the government's interest and for houses of worship". Courts have put his travel ban executive orders on hold - finding Trump's own words provided evidence of a "Muslim ban".

The order does not seem to include a measure that would allow organizations to discriminate against LGBTQ people based on religious beliefs, as it had been thought it might.

While the executive order signals a promise kept, fully repealing the Johnson amendment would require Congressional action. It also asks a federal judge in Madison to force the IRS to enforce the same restrictions on churches and religious organizations as it does for any other nonprofit organization. It instructs the Department of Justice to "issue guidance" on existing law and directs the secretaries of the the Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services to "consider issuing amended regulations" to "address conscience-based objections" to the contraception mandate.

Despite the president's show of the bill, policy experts say that the order will have little to no noticeable effect on current policy.

In the wake of a presidential executive order restoring religious freedom, a constitutional attorney is making the case that the states, Congress, and federal agencies are keys to carrying it out.

The executive order does not change the law.

The American Civil Liberties Union is not that anxious about President Trump's new "religious liberty" executive order.

An earlier version of the order, which had previously leaked to The Nation, would have provided sweeping legal protections for people to claim religious exemptions, provisions that civil liberties groups claimed would allow for discrimination against LGBT Americans. "There are more than 50 religious Americans and groups [who] sued the previous. administration for violating their religious freedom". "Just because we are a pastor, just because we stand beside a pulpit, we don't give up our constitutional rights". But he has concerns about mixing politics and religion. Do you support or oppose them?

The executive order makes no mention of any such provision, much to the dismay of conservative religious leaders, who believe the president has ignored the wishes of his most fervent supporters.
