Great White Sharks Spotted Swimming Near Beachgoers Off California Coast

Chris Lowe, the director of the Shark Lab at Cal State Long Beach, has been studying the recent shift in great white behavior in Southern California.

Helicopter footage taken of the waters just off Capistrano Beach shows the sharks, which are thought to be juveniles, swimming just beyond the surf break.

Warnings have been posted on beaches up and down south California after shark sightings this week.

Swimmers off Capistrano Beach in Orange County got some surprising news from above on Wednesday.

He said: "You are paddle-boarding next to approximately 15 great white sharks".

In Orange County, people enjoying the water were told via a helicopter loudspeaker to make their way to shore due to a group 15 sharks, which can be aggressive, in the area. Some who gathered along the shore waded out into the water because they wanted to see the great whites in person. Yesterday, Wednesday, Long Beach lifeguards posted the beach here warning of sharks after several were seen in waters off the coast.

Not long ago, they saw a 14-foot shark about 100 yards from the beach at Capo Beach.

The population of great whites off Southern California is also higher in part because they have been protected by federal law for years and the region is a nursery for sharks, according to researchers. With more humans and more sharks hanging out in the same place, shark attacks could climb.

"The reason why I think we're seeing more sharks is because we've protected them". Sharks keep food webs in balance, stabilize other fish populations, and prevent the fish they prey on from taking over vital sea grass bed habitats. "When they're babies, they're afraid of pretty much everything, so they may not really be that different from us", Lowe said.

But while it might seem like sharks are becoming a bigger threat, experts say the opposite scenario is closer to the truth.
