Japan reports increase in parasitic worm infections from eating raw fish

Beware your next Seattle roll; doctors say it could contain something that should never be found in sushi (besides cream cheese): a "worm-like" parasite.

Freezing or cooking doesn't make for palatable sushi, but to give an example of what damage the parasite can inflict, the study, published yesterday in the journal BMJ Case Reports, talks about a "previously healthy" 32-year-old who became violently ill after he ate raw fish.

But it was only when the man said he had eaten sushi that doctors suspected he might have anisakiasis, reports the BBC.

Sushi-lovers are being warned about the dangers of parasites from eating raw and undercooked fish.

An endoscopy revealed that the man did, in fact, have a large, worm-like parasite growing in an enflamed area of his gut.

The larva was removed and the patient's symptoms improved immediately, according to the BMJ report. The man had been vomiting with stomach pain and a fever, but doctors did not suspect the parasite until the man mentioned recently eating sushi, according to BBC News.

When doctors put an endoscope, a long tube with a camera, down his throat they found a mass of writhing white larvae burrowing into his gut lining.

A parasite firmly attached to an area of swollen and hyperaemic mucosa, with its end penetrating gastric mucosa, was seen on the gastric body in an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. They further added that the disease is growing in western countries and advised healthcare professionals to think about the condition in patients with pain, nausea, vomiting, and other complications such as bowel obstruction and bleeding, who have recently consumed raw or undercooked fish.

Although it is generally considered safe to eat some types of raw fish if it is very fresh, experts said sushi actually carries an unseen hazard.

According to the authors of the study, "most of the [anisakiasis] cases were described in Japan due to food habits; however, it has been increasingly recognised in Western countries".

"Patients can have allergic symptoms".

They noted that the condition, known as anisakiasis, is caused by eating undercooked or raw fish or seafood that has been contaminated.

"This will ensure that any undetected Anisakis larvae are killed".
