Officer dead after OH nursing home shooting

The gunman was in a wooded area behind the nursing home when he encountered two passers-by, whom he temporarily took hostage. No nursing home residents were injured. Thorp said he assumes [Chief] Disario had engaged the suspect.

Disario, responding to a report of a man with a gun, apparently encountered the gunman in that area.

Investigators identified the slain Kirkersville police chief as 36-year-old Steven Eric Disario, who had been on the job for only three weeks and had six children, with a seventh on the way. For a shooter to get into the locked facility, Casto says a person would need someone to let them in or have access to the code.

Kirkersville Elementary School is on lockdown and will remain closed for the day, reports say.
