HACKERS Threatening To Leak One Of Disney's Newest Blockbusters

TV and film studios are increasingly being targeted by hackers, unnerving an industry that is already dealing with rampant piracy problems worldwide.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney CEO Bob Iger informed employees at a town hall meeting on Monday that the company is working with United States federal investigators on the ransom case and that the "huge sum" will not be paid.

He didn't name the movie, but one of the studio's biggest anticipated summer releases, ironically, is "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", scheduled for release May 26th.

The Walt Disney Company didn't respond to requests for comment.

Since Friday, banks, hospitals and government agencies have been among a variety of targets for hackers exploiting vulnerabilities in older Microsoft computer operating systems.

Deadline.com said the film was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the latest instalment of the franchise starring Johnny Depp.

The news comes weeks after episodes from the new season of Orange Is the New Black were posted illegally on the Internet after Netflix bosses refused to heed a hackers ransom demands. Disney won't pay the ransom and is waiting to see if the leak indeed occurs, Iger reportedly said.

The studio is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to identify the source of the hack. The hackers have however threatened to release increasingly longer pieces of the movie online if they aren't paid.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise has pulled in an nearly incomprehensible $3.72 billion in worldwide box office since the first installment in 2003.
