Japan gets Ireland and Scotland at 2019 Rugby World Cup

While there is a lot of rugby to be played between now and the tournament itself, which starts on 20 September 2019, Gregor Townsend's team can at least take a degree of comfort from the fact that they have won their most recent meetings against both the Irish and the Japanese.

Pool B - New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, Africa 1, repechage victor.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said their match-up against South Africa in Pool B would now give their annual Rugby Championship games extra meaning.

"Our pool will be highly competitive and full of intensity, as a World Cup group should be – history shows that you need to win seven games to win the tournament and we will greatly respect every team we play".

Wales lost to Australia during the 2015 World Cup, and they also face tough opposition from rapidly-improving Georgia. "It's all very exciting isn't it?".

"We've just got to find out where the games are going to be played, so we can get our planning set".

Wednesday's draw could complicate Jones's oft-repeated vow to dethrone top-ranked New Zealand, who have won the World Cup three times.

"If that comes to fruition then clearly they're going to be a different beast in the World Cup year than what they are now".

Coetzee attended the draw in Kyoto, Japan along with representatives from the other 11 qualified teams and said afterwards he was satisfied with the pool allocation.

Pool B consists of the current World Cup holders New Zealand plus former champions South Africa and Conor O'Shea's Italy.

Australia's other two Pool D opponents are likely to be either Fiji or Samoa from Oceania and either the US or Canada from the Americas qualifying competition.

The other two teams in Pool D are not yet known for certain but will be one of Fiji, Tonga and Samoa as well as either the United States or Canada. The play-off place will be decided by a home-and-away tie between the third team in the Pacific Nations Cup and the second team (again, excluding Georgia) in the Rugby Europe competition.

"I'm excited by the draw".

Twelve teams were included in yesterday's draw by virtue of finishing in the top three of their groups at the 2015 tournament. "Australia went past Ireland and Argentina", Jones said.

The Springboks have beaten the All Blacks twice at the World Cup (1995 final and 1999 bronze medal place) and pushed the world champions in an intense clash in the semifinal stage in 2015.
