Rebel Wilson tells court Australian articles hurt her career

Australian Hollywood actress Rebel Wilson's "world collapsed" after a number of magazines, including Woman's Day, published articles allegedly insinuating she was a serial liar, a Melbourne court has been told.

She says Bauer Media damaged her reputation by printing articles alleging she had used a fake name, claimed she was 29 when in fact she was 36, and had lied about her background.

Rebel wiped away tears as she testified in the Supreme Court of Victoria, rejecting the publisher's argument that the stories were light-hearted and had no serious impact on her career.

Wilson's lawyer says his client was devastated by a series of magazine articles the actress says painted her as a liar and subsequently cost her roles in Hollywood.

According to courtroom reports, Wilson is saying that she was sacked from at least two movies and has been unable to find work since Bauer's campaign of eight articles was published back in 2015.

The 37-year-old said while in her "gap year" after secondary school, she lived in South Africa where she became seriously ill.

Bauer Media denies the articles were defamatory.

The trial is expected to run for several weeks.

She hit out at the articles at the centre of the lawsuit, saying they killed her career.

In a court nearby, staff could have swung a cat as a man faced charges for a grisly murder.

Ms Wilson told media outside court that it was traumatic to relive the saga.

This was day one of a three-week defamation trial - or 15 days of celebrity theatre depending on which way you looked at it.

The articles appeared in magazines including Woman's Day and the Australian Women's Weekly.

"My mum's obsessed with dogs", Wilson said.

It was more important to ensure the process of justice was not undermined.

Wilson picked up a pen and jotted down notes as both legal teams made their own assessments.

In the end, a panel of six women was picked.

Wilson is set to take the stand herself later in the hearing.

"To stand up there like that, " she said.
