Instagram launches location and hashtag stories

While Facebook continues to aggressively copy its staple features, Snapchat is busy creating new ones.

According to Snapchat, custom stories will disappear if no one from the group adds anything for 24 hours.

Any Snapchat user can create their own Story, but now they'll be able to invite their contacts to post to a shared Story as well. Snapchat will create a one-block geofence around your current location. Your footage will be added to that city's Explore story.

You'll see a new story ring at the top of Explore filled with stories happening near you. Like the location Stories, they will also be personalized to each user based on their interests and habits.

Snapchat users will already be familiar with something similar, but it's not the first time that's been true of a new Instagram feature after all.

In a brief test of story search, I found it to be a fun way to teleport around the world and watch people goof off. That rival app has been growing steadily in part by mimicking features popularized by Snapchat, including stories and visual effects called "lenses".

"With custom Stories, Snapchatters can create a Story in collaboration with friends and family - ideal for a trip, a birthday party, or those new baby Snaps for family members across the country".

The update is slowly rolling out to Snapchat users right now. Get ready to see some family vacation snap stories, some bachelorette party nonsense, and a whole ton of award show or sports game watching parties with people who are itching to show off all of their custom made photo booths.

And in some ways Instagram's information will be even more accurate than that of those other platforms, because its data will be updated in real time.

According to the company's most recent figures, the app now has 166 million daily active users. If you use hashtags and location tags, and Instagram happens to need that content, your media can be added for the entire Instagram community to view it.
