Samsung Display to Unveil World's First 'Stretchable' Display Panel

Samsung will shortly unveil a new kind of display, at the Society for Information Display (SID) Display Week 2017, which kicks off tomorrow in LA.

Samsung is experimenting with a new type of stretchable OLED technology with additional flexibility over existing flexible OLED displays. Even then, it "still maintains a high degree of resolution", according to Samsung.

According to some reports, Samsung is planning to unveil world's first stretchable display design today at U.S. conference. But once out in the market it "can be stretched to be used for various high technologies, including wearable display, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and automobile display". This is going to be the most advanced display technology that the South Korean company is introducing into the tech industry. With this smaller 3D display users will see any displayed image differently based upon their viewing position. LG is also working on a foldable display albeit one that only folds one way. "While one high-end version features an OLED screen, two other variants will use LCD displays in 4.7" and 5.5" sizes. This according to the report will include the unveiling of 9.1-inch stretchable displays. However, according to research firm IHS Markit, flexible displays could make up almost 15 percent of the display market by 2024.

Thebendable OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen which can stretch in both direction by as much as 12 millimetres might spell out a new era in phone screen technology. This makes the material ideal in the development and commercialization of flexible displays for the future.

However, reports claimed in January that the long-rumoured 'Galaxy X' (aka Project Valley) foldable smartphone/tablet will be launched in the third quarter this year, quite possibly at the IFA trade show in Berlin this September.
