Rahul Gandhi heads for Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh despite no permission

The Uttar Pradesh police refused permission to AICC Vice President Rahul Gandhi's visit to Saharanpur.

Unperturbed by the Opposition's criticism over Saharanpur clashes, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said that maintenance of law and order has been the priority of his government and assured that they would work for the same in the coming days.

No official reason has been cited for the action, but it is believed that the top officials were removed after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed displeasure as they could not control the situation in Saharanpur district.

"Since the Bharatiya Janata Party has come to power in the state, law and order has deteriorated massively", Yadav told ANI. He had told ANI that the visit is just a photo-op of Gandhi.

The fallout of these incidents has been the emergence of a new generation of Dalit leaders like the 30-year-old lawyer, Chandrashekhar Azad "Ravan", who led the so-called Bhim Army (named after the Dalit icon, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar) for protests against the Saharanpur violence in Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

In a bid to calm tempers, the state government had sent State Home Secretary Mani Parsad Mishra and ADG (Law and Order) Aditya Mishra to Saharanpur.

On Thursday, the Centre sought a report from the UP government on the continuing violence in Saharanpur.

UP Minister Sidharth Nath Singh said that Gandhi was denied permission considering the violence and murder that took place after the visit of BSP chief Mayawati. His comments came in the wake of a gangrape-murder in Greater Noida, similar to the one witnessed on a highway in Bulandshahr a year ago, and the caste clashes in Saharanpur.

Violence again erupted yesterday where one man was killed by the gunshot of an unidentified person which also injured another person today, as reported.

More than 2,000 members of a community had allegedly gheraoed a village in Saharanpur earlier this month, and set fire to more than two dozen houses belonging to Dalits.

On May 23, another person was shot dead and two others were wounded, following which the government suspended the SSP and district magistrate and transferred the divisional commissioner and the deputy inspector general of police.
