Pentagon to Test Missile Interceptor

North Korea has test-fired a missile into Japanese waters, the latest in a series of launches that have ratcheted up tensions over its nuclear weapons program.

Trump, who has sought more help from China to rein in its neighbour and ally, said on Twitter that "North Korea has shown great disrespect for their neighbour, China, by shooting off yet another ballistic missile. but China is trying hard!"

The North's short-range ballistic missile traveled about 250 miles and splashed down in Japan's "exclusive economic zone" - an area where commercial ships are known to operate.

While today's test was not timed because of recent North Korean actions, he said, North Korea is one of the reasons why the United States has the capability.

The Pentagon, however, noted that the test had been planned for a long time and it was not a reaction to North Korea's launch, CNN's report said.

The isolated but nuclear-armed North Korea has test-fired a missile nearly every week for the past three weeks.

It later says it was simulating nuclear strikes on US military bases in Japan.

The ground-based interceptor system is mainly created to counter a North Korean missile threat, but a US official said Tuesday's test has been planned for years and is coincidental to North Korea's increased missile testing this year.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday promised to give a bigger "gift package" to the United States, after he supervised the test of a new ballistic missile controlled by a precision guidance system, according to the North's official KCNA news agency reports.

North Korea is still thought to be several years from its goal of being able to target US mainland cities with a nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile.

"Prime Minister Abe said dialogue for the sake of dialogue is meaningless and it is necessary now to put pressure on North Korea", a Japanese foreign ministry statement quoted him as saying. USA officials say the missile was likely a KN-17, a new Scud-type missile. "This regime is a threat to the region, to Japan, to South Korea, and in the event of war, they would bring danger to China and to Russian Federation, as well". Despite Trump's strident warnings of possible military intervention, Secretary of Defense James Mattis said in an interview which aired Sunday before the launch that a war with North Korea would be "catastrophic".

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said missile had a flight range of about 450 kilometres.

Florence Looi, reporting from Seoul, said North Korea accused the USA and South Korea of military provocation and said this would bring the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war.
