Writer/commentator John Clayton among ESPN layoffs

ESPN also let go a significant number of its Major League Baseball and NHL experts in the recent layoffs, perhaps most notably Jayson Stark.

John Clayton will be laid off from ESPN after 23 years of covering the NFL.

On April 26, ESPN laid off dozens of prominent on-air personalities, including Jayson Stark, Ed Werder, Jay Crawford and Dana O'Neil.

Clayton expressed gratitude for his time at ESPN, which he described as the second-best relationship of his life behind his marriage. He will continue to broadcast his ESPN radio program, which airs in Seattle, because ESPN radio affiliates are independently owned.

Clayton starred in one of ESPN's best "This is SportsCenter" commercials in 2012, as he provides commentary to anchor Stan Verrett.

Clayton also made a reference to his fantastic SportsCenter commercial. Clayton is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, as he has been enshrined in the writer's wing of the Canton, Ohio museum.
