America's Cup - Umpires admit error in controversial win for Kiwis

Underdogs Groupama Team France won their first race of the America's Cup in Bermuda on Sunday, while defender Oracle Team USA tasted defeat for the first time in the contest.

Groupama's hopes of building on the win over Ainslie however came unstuck in their second race, when they were thrashed by Japan's SoftBank Team Japan, skippered by former Team New Zealand ace Dean Barker.

Emirates Team New Zealand posted two wins to climb into a tie with Land Rover BAR.

Prior to defeating Ainslie's team, the New Zealand boat also beat Japan.

A near-perfect second day of racing has put Team NZ in the driver's seat at the America's Cup qualifier series off Bermuda.

"When you look at the conditions, it's no surprise at all that either team could have been a long way ahead", he said.

Four-time Olympic champion Ainslie later admitted his team had produced "our best race".

"It is a very good feeling for the whole team, we have been waiting two years for that feeling", said Franck Cammas after his team's victory in their only race of the day.

Groupama Team France have two races today and want more points on the board. “Its just a shame we couldnt repay that work with some wins today, ” he said.

The variable winds over the Great Sound racecourse came to the fore in race 10, as Artemis Racing prevailed in a topsy-turvy battle against ORACLE TEAM USA. "We actually made quite a lot of them, especially early on in the first two starts". However, despite the lapse in concentration and having to start two boat lengths behind the British team, the incident didn't prove disastrous as they bounced back spectacularly. "It's the sort of thing that if you took it to a boat yard they would say "that will take two or three months".

Sweden dangled the carrot in front of Peter Burling, but the Team NZ skipper wasn't falling for it.

Britain were then defeated by one minute and 28 seconds against New Zealand after their opponents recovered from a penalty for crossing the boundary.

Following the collision with Team Japan, Team BAR's boat came close to sinking after the hull lifted right out of the water and slammed into Japan's starboard hull during the pre-start. “It didnt happen last night, so Im guessing hell probably do it tonight.”.

"We couldn't buy a shift on the upwinds, we just kept fighting our way back into it to try and give ourselves a chance at that bottom mark".
