Corbyn piles pressure on absent May in United Kingdom election debate

The prime minister stayed away from the debate, leaving home secretary Amber Rudd to face questions from an audience that was sometimes hostile and derisive.

Jeremy Corbyn will be off to Essex to discuss how he would tackle the Brexit negotiations which are reportedly due to start 11 days after the election, while Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron will be in London with party colleague Nick Clegg discussing the impact of Britain's exit from the European Union before heading for a grilling with Andrew Neil on the BBC.

Mr Corbyn snapped back insisting he was supported by the Labour Party. She is not the prime minister.

"Judge us on our record", Rudd declared, with some members of the public bursting into laughter.

There were, however, a few extremely disappointed fans who took pains to point out that it was NOT in fact the almighty Bake Off which was about to air on BBC2 - because, you know, it moved to Channel 4, remember? - but that Farron had instead pointed us in the direction of spin-off show, Creme de la Creme.

Mrs May was heavily criticised for her decision to miss the debate, but Boris Johnson defended her.

The seven-way debate, including Ukip leader Paul Nuttall and Green co-leader Caroline Lucas, comes just over a week before the general election on 8 June.

"Where do you think Theresa May is tonight?" Have you seen people sleeping around our stations?

Mr Nuttall argued that Muslims should do more to combat terrorism while Mr Corbyn attacked him for singling out the community.

She said: "It's as though he thinks it's some sort of game - a game of Monopoly perhaps where you ask the banker for the red money to pay electrics, the green money to buy the railways and the yellow money to buy the gasworks".

Ms Lucas, who performed strongly throughout, said Ms Rudd's response on disability benefits was "downright insulting".

The Conservative policy would see elderly voters in England with more than £100,000 in assets have to pay for their social care costs. "And we've made sure that we've continued to invest in the NHS". "She wants five years as prime minister and she thinks you'll give it to her, no questions asked - literally", he said.

Mr Corbyn responded that Mrs May and other senior Conservatives had voted against anti-terror laws in 2005.

But the most powerful finale came from Mr Farron, who won loud applause when he said: "You're not worth Theresa May's time". Don't give her yours'.
