Ainslie retires from America's Cup trials race with damage

Emirates Team New Zealand capsized Tuesday at the start of an America's Cup challenger semifinal race against Britain on Bermuda's stormy Great Sound, throwing three crewmen into the water and extensively damaging its 50-foot catamaran.

While the Kiwis maintain a firm 3-1 lead in the first-to-five series, this point will give Ainslie's British team a hopeful shot, though the extreme weather conditions are not to be underestimated.

Mr Murray had a slideshow presentation showing wind data at the time of Team New Zealand's crash was 21.7 knots - well inside the raceable start limit of 24 knots.

The limit for racing is 24 knots, so this will be music to the ears of the Team New Zealand shore crew who were expected to be working overnight to fix the damage to their yacht in time for today's races.

The British challenge now has a mountain to climb to remain alive with the Kiwis leading 2-0 in the series and needing only three more wins to advance.

Pitch-poled: Ainslie, the most successful Olympic sailor, got the better of Burling at the start, ensuring a clean run over the line.

He said on his team's YouTube channel: "It doesn't get any worse for the team, we felt like we'd made some great improvements overnight, the speed was really good, really positive". He then launched his own campaign, attempting to become the first Englishman to hoist the silver trophy in victory.

Team New Zealand damaged its wing sail prior to the day's first race and went back to shore to swap it out. He was knighted several months after winning his fourth straight gold medal in home waters in 2012.

In the other semifinal, SoftBank Team Japan beat Sweden's Artemis Racing twice to take a 3-1 lead.

Conditions were ideal for the high-octane sailing boats following disappointment on Sunday when racing was postponed because of a lack of wind.

In reply, Artemis Racing's helmsman Nathan Outteridge was satisfied with his team's performance overall in what proved a close battle against Dean Barker.

"All sailors accounted for and safe after Emirates TeamNZ capsize", the team tweeted. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
