Apple kicks off event with virtual reality, browser privacy

If the speculation pans out, the speaker would be Apple's first new product since its smartwatch in 2015.

Analysts are definitely expecting updates about iOS 11, Apple's mobile operating system. The Apple Watch is the company's most innovative product of the past few years, and its growth has been steady but slow.

The Apple HomePod was introduced today bringing Apple into the world of the smart speaker.

Against other smart home assistants, the HomePod's targets are different from ostensible competitors like the Amazon Echo. With Siri most widely used on iPhone, Apple risked missing out on the daily, at-home tasks consumers increasingly use Echo or Home for - reminders, calendars, music.

The HomePod - due to launch in December - looks like a mesh cylinder.

The new iPad Pro will have a 10.5-inch screen, placing it between the current 9.7 and 13-inch screens of Apple's flagship tablet. The new model will begin shipping on Monday.

HomePod doubles as a home assistant since it's powered by Siri. The HomePod is powered by Apple's A8 chip and will be available from December in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the USA, which will be getting the initial batch of speakers in White and Space Grey at $349 (roughly Rs. 22,500).

Apple said it had updated the processors in its iMac and MacBook Pro lineup to Intel's most recent "Kaby Lake" processors.

HomePod will compete with Amazon's Echo and Google Home for the smart speaker market, and will support Apple Music and Siri and will provide news, traffic updates and play music.

Apple execs demonstrated Macs producing VR experiences, though they didn't immediately talk about making a headset to view them.

Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the latest operating system for Mac computers. Siri can get conversational too, so during a song you could ask 'Who is the lead singer of this band?' and the HomePod will understand that you're referring to the band that's playing.

The money can be stored on a virtual card and used with Apple Pay, which Apple expects will be accepted in 50 percent of US retailers by the end of the year.

Amazon is already available on rival devices such as Roku and, of course, Amazon's Fire TV.

Apple says its looking to "reinvent" the way we listen to music in the home.

Still, the Apple Watch hasn't been a smash hit, fueling worries that the company's ability to transfix customers had waned after the 2011 death of co-founder Steve Jobs.

Apple appears poised to unveil a voice-activated, internet-connected speaker that would create a new digital pipeline into people's homes.

But really, this is Apple's admission that it needed to kick the voice command can down the road a bit and strengthen Siri but it goes gunning for Google and Amazon. For Apple, having one would further broaden the role that its software, services and gadgets play in people's lives.
