Afghanistan win toss and bat against West Indies

St. Lucia [West Indies], June 12: The West Indies bowler came out with a stupendous performance to help their side beat Afghanistan by four wickets in the second ODI to level the three-match series here at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia on Sunday.

Eighteen-year-old leg-spinner Rashid Khan once again caused some consternation in the Windies batting, finishing with three for 26 from his 10 overs while seamer Naib caimed two for 15.

Earlier, choosing to bat again on the same pitch used for the first match two days earlier, Afghanistan struggled against the extra pace and bounce of the West Indies' bowlers, making just 135 off 37.3 overs.

Gulbadin Naib top-scored with 51 batting at number eight but no other batsman passed 20, as West Indies quicks turned the screws on the innings.

Rahmat and Samiullah Shenwari (2) perished in successive overs from Gabriel and wickets continued to tumble until Naib arrived to thump two fours and two sixes in a 73-ball innings.

"It was a definite change of tactics and it paid off", said Holder.

The final game of the series will be played in St. Lucia on Wednesday.

After opener Javed Ahmadi's 81 provided the foundation for the visitors' total of 212-6 batting first, leg-spinner Khan tore through an inept home team batting lineup to claim the fourth-best bowling figures ever in an ODI, routing the Caribbean side for 149 off 44.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the series ahead of the second match at the same venue today.

But Roston Chase and Rovman Powell, in the side for the injured Miguel Cummins, hung around long enough with man-of- the-match Hope to see the West Indies to the target, even though it was left to Holder to hit the winning runs.

Holder, Gabriel, Joseph and Nurse picked up two wickets apiece, while Chase chipped in with one.
