Mika's family released a statement Thursday saying Mika suffered "massive trauma", needs breathing assistance and will need more surgery.

Mika was injured alongside House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, congressional staffer Zachary Barth, and several members on Scalise's security team. "Matt has worked for Tyson Foods for more than six years and we're deeply concerned about him and his family", the spokesperson said.

Mika, a former congressional aide, is being treated at George Washington University Hospital, the Washington Post reported.

Matt Mika, director of government relations in the meat processor's Washington office, was shot when a gunman fired upon a group of congressmen practicing for an upcoming charity-benefit baseball game.

Our family is now here with him and we continue to ask for privacy and understanding while we focus on Matt and his recovery. His Linkedin profile says he was tasked with "handling both state and federal issues, including issues related to the Farm Bill and the Committees on Agriculture".

The congressman said Mika's status as an "overachiever" goes back to his days playing football and baseball at Michigan's Adrian College.

The other people shot include the gunman, two Capitol Police officers, and a staffer for Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas.
