Trump to tighten Cuba travel rules

The departure is the latest example of Trump taking action to undercut his predecessor's legacy.

Former President Barack Obama may have begun normalizing relations with Cuba, but President Donald Trump will be re-tightening regulations regarding travel. And Trump has made repealing Obamacare, the former president's sweeping health care law, a top priority. The 2000 law would be somewhat of a shield for those sales when President Trump realigns USA policy toward Havana, scheduled in Miami on Friday.

"It has not led to greater freedom in Cuba", one official said.

Supporters of Trump's changes said they are created to hurt Cuba's communist government economically, and encourage people to rise up against the regime that has been in power since 1959. The administration said the policy directs new regulations to be developed.

Recent polls from Engage Cuba and the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) have established that a majority of Americans support open travel to Cuba.

Reversing course in Cuba would benefit neither Cubans nor Americans.

Leading human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) have denounced a potential rollback of current US policy. During that event, the Trump noticed the people are eager for the President to place the human rights and free in Cuba and protection to U.S national security during the Castro bond.

The congressman purportedly backed House Republicans' legislation on health care in March in exchange for Trump's tougher stance on Cuba, The New York Times and other news media have reported.

Mr Trump will seek a partial rollback of Obama's policies, limiting trade with businesses associated with the Cuban military-which is involved in large parts of the economy.

Americans will not be allowed to conduct any business with anyone or entity linked to the Cuban military or intelligence services. "I don't think anything that (Trump) will do will help us get rid of those communists in Cuba". The Cuban government headed by Raúl Castro, the late Castro's brother, he said, "is a narco-terrorist tyranny, and we know President Trump understands this". This could have a cooling effect on travel as it adds a potential layer of inconvenience to travelers.

That is the opinion of the leader of the Engage Cuba coalition, James Williams, who said that dismantling the policies implemented by the Barack Obama administration (2009-2017) would be bad for the USA and Cuban peoples and for the White House chief himself. "It could also allow Russian Federation and China to more easily step in to fill the void". Trump's hatred of Obama is apparent.

That's a pretty hefty human rights issue, too.

"(Cuba) represses dissent and discourages public criticism", Human Rights Watch wrote in a blog post.

Human rights advocates acknowledge that Cuba has made little progress in that area, despite the Obama overtures. Major travel and agricultural companies and associations have publicly warned that a reversal would cost American jobs.

Rubio is in the forefront of those pushing for change in the Obama rapprochement.

"We had dinner with Sen". Marco Rubio and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, two of the hardest Cuban hard-liners in Congress. Rubio noted Thursday that the Cuban military's tourism arm brags about doing business with half of all visitors to the island. "And we've already seen significant changes", said Williams. Raul Castro and his closest advisers are mostly in their 80s.

Don't expect the new measures to sway Cuba's leaders.

"From Eisenhower to Trump, there has never been a North American government looking at Havana with friendship", the broadcaster said. Especially in Southern Florida, where Cubans make up a key voting bloc for Republicans, Trump railed on Obama for building relations with the Castros.

He reiterated this point on Twitter after winning the election.

Some 285,000 people visited the Caribbean country in 2016, up 74 percent over 2015, with Americans the third biggest group after Canadians and Cuban expats.

Rolling back Obama era reforms will hurt the Cuban people the most.

"Being a Cuban-American from South Florida doesn't mean you're foursquare against the embargo", Crawford said in an interview.
