Deputy AG Rosenstein set for budget hearing Tuesday

Supporters of President Donald Trump floated the idea Monday that Trump should fire Mueller, and Chris Ruddy, a Trump confidant, told reporters after leaving the White House yesterday that Trump was considering doing just that.

The notion was dismissed by senior White House aides later Monday evening, who said that Ruddy does not speak for the president.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, weighing in Tuesday morning, advised the White House and Trump to let the special counsel's investigation continue, and await vindication. "With respect to this subject, only the President or his attorneys are authorized to comment", Press Secretary Sean Spicer told the Daily Caller's Kaitlin Collins late Monday night.

The decision would fall to Rosenstein because Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the investigation.

He served the bureau for 12 years during the administration of President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama.

"I don't think donations are disqualifying at all, but if you represented the Clinton Foundation or Mrs. Clinton herself, that would be a bit disturbing", Graham said.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel". Nevertheless, Rosenstein would need to provide a legal argument and "the specific reason" for the special counsel's termination, Goldsmith wrote. Former President Richard Nixon's attempt to remove a special prosecutor during his tenure led to the resignations of two top Justice Department officials amid the Watergate scandal.

Ryan echoed that sentiment, calling the reports about the president possibly moving to fire Mueller "a rumor". Rosenstein said he has seen no evidence of good cause to fire the special prosecutor overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.

Some of Mr Trump's allies have begun questioning Mr Mueller's credibility as the investigation intensifies.

Comey testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee last week that he leaked information from memos he wrote describing his private conversations with Trump.

Ryan argued Mueller must be allowed to carry on his investigation "because of what [Trump] did with Comey", referring to the president's decision to fire the former FBI director over the Russian Federation investigation.

He said he doubts Mueller can be trusted to carry out an impartial investigation. "I can't imagine that anyone in the White House is seriously discussing that".

He told senators during a committee hearing that there would have to be "good cause" for Mueller to be removed from his role.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein delivers remarks during an event marking National Missing Children's Day at the Justice Department May 24, 2017 in Washington, DC.

"I appointed him. I stand by it. and I am going to defend the integrity of that investigation", he said.

Comey leaked those memos because Trump was trying to get a legitimate and important investigation ended, a clear case of corruption. If President Trump were to make such a move, he would have to order Rosenstein to fire Mueller. Still, Gingrich said any special counsel with an agenda can "all of the sudden find something procedural and technical to latch onto".
