Iran launches missiles at ISIL in eastern Syria

IRGC forces fired the medium-range, ground-to-ground ballistic missiles from bases in the western Iranian provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan, according to Iranian state media outlet Tasnim news.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards stated on Sunday that it has targeted the bases of militant groups in Syria with several missiles.

The Guard said, in a statement published on its Sepahnews website, that the missiles were "in retaliation" for the June 7 attacks on Tehran claimed by IS.

The launch of surface-to-surface medium range missiles into Syria's Deir Ezzor province comes as ISIL militants fleeing a US-led coalition onslaught increasingly try to fortify their positions there.

The Daesh Takfiri terrorist group claimed responsibility for the assaults.

On June 7, gunmen and suicide bombers attacked the parliament complex and the shrine of revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in Tehran, killing 17 people.

Such an attack is rare in Syria's long-running civil war, in which Iran is backing embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The Guard warned ISIL militants and their "regional and worldwide supporters" that similar retaliatory attacks would target them as well if another assault in Iran occurred.

The IRGC had vowed revenge for the attacks and accused Saudi Arabia of supporting ISIS in the operation.
